02 December 2022 Jamil Sheriff's 5 Gold Rings

Described by the Guardian as a Wayne Shorter-like commitment to narrative composition… There is no
shortage of fine soloists… immaculate taste… soul and lyricism.
Jamil Sheriff has been a stand out member of the UK Jazz scene for over 20 years and has a reputation for pulling together exceptional bands. Five Gold Rings brings the classic sound of the Blue Note quintet, with driving, swinging melodies and solos performed by these outstanding musicians. There’s something for everyone in this set, Blues, Swing, Afro Cuban, Funk, Hard Bop, Latin… all wrapped up in Jamil’s exquisite compositions.

01 July 2022 Jonah Evans Quartet

“New Kids on the Block” Jonah Evans Trio have made huge impressions in an alarmingly short period
. Organ-based trio who swing with an expertise belying their tender years. Jonah – an unbelievable drummer, period - having been discovered by LCoM’s “Generation Big Band” project (supported by Ronnie Scott’s Charitable Foundation) and graduating LCoM in June ‘21 was quickly snapped-up by RCM for his Masters. Similarly, we grabbed him quick on his vocational return to Leeds. A feast awaits followers of the hyperlink >>

03 June 2022 - Nicola Farnon Quartet
The typical Nicola Farnon "CLASS" from start to finish elevated yet further by the simply glorious Jim Corry and Richard Weatherall. All of which is fine as long as the foundations are good? Well the redoubtable Phil Johnson saw to that! The audience wouldn't let them leave. BRILLIANT!

06 May 2022 - Andrzej Baranek Quintet + SPECIAL GUEST

My letter of reflective post-gig Thanks to Andrzej Baranek Quintet :

"a quick note of thanks for the gig of the century on Friday! Absolute cracker, one of the best I have ever been to in fact. Unremittingly Brilliant from opening to close.

So a great BIG Thank You and look forward to seeing you again before too long"

01 April 2022 - Alex Fisher Quartet
What a cracking evening of Jazz this was. Alex' originals woven round delightful sax "standards", lovingly massaged by 4 terrific young musicians. "Jazz" is in the good hands of . . .‘

04 March 2022 - New York Brass Band

Having had to cancel the RdJ Carnival owing to Covid uncertainties, James Lanacaster went to hang out in New Orleans for a short break instead and landed at 6 am on the Friday morning of the gig. Other than a little hoarseness, you'd hardly know - Quite Simply, NYBB blew all our socks off. Opening to a standing ovation following the salutory, respectful Ukranian National Anthem in fittingly sombre mood, they proceeded to shred us with a thorough trip around the globe of music. Easy to see why these Guys are so popular at all the Carnivals and Festivals, not to mention their Channel 4 appearances and brilliant gigs elsewhere. Their honesty, virtuosity, adaptability and showmanship does them all proud. Never to be missed I believe and I've booked 'em for June 2022 for good measure - Festival Warm-Up period! Might be seismic
Chris Williamson - trp, Dan Webster - trp, Stu MacDonald - sax, Will Osborne - trm,
Stuart Garside - trm, Al Morrison - g, James Lancaster - tuba, Louis Singleton - d

04 February 2022 - Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat

Emma's newly released “Worry Not” is a mighty fine album, without doubt, however it's live manifestation really is something to behold. An incredibly tight ensemble, yet marvelously loose in a jazz way, they captivated an enthusiastic and attentive crowd. Emma Johnson’s Gravy Boat comprise
Emma Johnson - sax, Fergus Vickers - g, Richard Jones - p, Angus Milne - db & Steve Hanley - d. Defintely a band to see!

7 January 2022 Winifred Atwell Revisited

What a stunning evening this was. Not only staggeringly good musicians, but consummate entertainers, both. Adam led us through the Atwell story, the boits we might have known and a good bit we surely did not, but all highly illuminating. This coupled with pianistic and percussive wizardry made for a supremely entertaining evening. Regrettably, yet quite understandably, numbers were "cautious" and definitely case-rate affected, so as soon as some normality returns, we'll be sure to have them back for a full house.
For those keen to experience this unique thrill, their just-released album can be both heard and procured in virtual and physical forms at https://adamfairhall.bandcamp.com/album/winifred-atwell-revisited

Adam Fairhall -- p Johnny Hunter - drum
